Story behind the song
Ryan had a particular way of playing "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" that I absolutely loved. He was in town visiting one day, and started playing it. We both decided that we should turn it into something, so we set ourselves to work. The first task was mapping out the song. The song has several changes, so we divided it into four movements. We had to construct the skeleton of the song before we could go any further. Once that was done, we took the song one section at a time, doing many overdubs. We would mess with different sounds for each section, trying out different things. The song itself was recorded over the course of about a week, and mixed and mastered in about another week for a rush Christmas release of 2007. Over time though, I grew unhappy with the original mix. A year later, I decided to sit down and really do a proper job on the mix. I spent a good week mixing it before I decided I was happy with the result, and that's what you have here. This is hands down one of my favorite tracks I ever had the pleasure of working on.
