Story behind the song
“Out Of My Mind” began its early life in May 2004 and was originally written by myself and Kelly Shelton. We had just read the article on cnn.com about alleged abuse of Iraq prisoners by US soldiers. Inspired by this, we sat right down to write a commentary song about the whole thing. The original name of the song was “Three Cheers”, but quickly evolved into “The World Is Coming To An End”. It was demoed in my studio, and we were so excited about it that we decided to immediately book time at Studio 7 in Downtown Oklahoma City to record a final version. About a week later, we entered the studio and laid the song down in an entire day. Originally, I was supposed to play drums on the track. Eric Harmon from the band “Chainsaw Kittens” just happened to walk into the studio that day and we asked him if he would like to jam with us. He recorded the drums in two takes and then took off. Kelly and I laid down all the rest of the tracks, with Dave Copenhaver engineering a 24-track analogue machine. We were initially excited about the sessions and the song we produced, but as time went on, we grew dissatisfied with the result. The lyrics weren’t that good, and the vocal medley line was very weak. The music itself was strong, but needed some remixing and tweeking. I went back into the studio to create a digital backup of the analogue tape, and it sat in my archive for five years. Every now and then, I would pull it out to tweek with it. Around 2006, I came up with the new idea for the song “Out of My Mind”, but that’s about as far as it went. In 2008, while in the middle of my divorce, I became inspired to write the new lyrics. During the summer of 2008 and the summer of 2009, I completed the song with the new words. This is the end result.

Lyrics

I’m not your mother but I can see what’s wrong
You’ve been neglected for far too long
Just maybe this one time maybe I’ll get it right
And then you won’t feel the need to bitch too long

But it’s not enough for you the things I always do
I try so hard but you break right through
Someday the skeletons that you’ve been hiding out
Are gonna break through and bring you down

I’m just going out of my mind
Don’t know where it’s been all this time
And it’s only when I’m with you
That I feel the way I do
You bring out the absolute worst in me
Exposing my true identity

Your arrogance and greed sum up all of your deeds
I’m really getting tired of these pointless mind games
Maybe I ask too much, maybe I beg too much
We all know you’re the only one to blame
